Blackfin was decommissioned Nov. 19, 1948. She was recommissioned May 15, 1951 as a Guppy conversion. This gave her a more streamlined hull and greater underwater endurance. She remained in commissioned until Sept. 15, 1972 when she was struck from the Ships Lists and later used as a target and sunk by torpedo in the "SubSinkEx Project Thurber" project. Blackfin played the part of the submarine in the movie "Ice Station Zebra" by running on her batteries during the filming since a true nuclear ship wouldn't show any signs of propulsion like the four diesel engines that Blackfin normally ran while traveling on the surface.
