Darter grounded just after midnight on Bombay Shoals 10/24/1944. Crew was taken off by the Dace and all papers were burned and equipment smashed. Demolition charges were set and exploded but little damage could be seen. Dace fired 4 torpedoes to no effect. Dace then unlimbered her deck gun and fired 30 rounds into Darter but she showed little damage. The next day the Japanese inspected the wreck. The submarine USS Rock SS 274 fired 10 torpedoes at Darter but they explode on the reef. The USS Nautilus SS 168 arrived on 10/31/1944 and fired 55 more rounds of 6 inch ammunition into Darter and it was then determined that she was only useful as scrap metal at that point. The midship section of Darter can still be seen on Bombay Shoal to this day. The US Navy finally abandoned Darter on June 24, 1958.
