Plagued with equipment failures and bad luck the S-40 made nine war patrols and at wars end was decommissioned on October 29, 1945.  She was struck from the Navy List on Nov.13. 1945. The S-40 was sold for scrap in Nov. 1946.  She was dismantled in July 1947.
