The Nautilus disabled at sea picking up a tow from the battleship USS Wyoming, seen in the background. Both engines of the subamrine had suffered failure on June 14,1931 and Wilkins had to radio an SOS. The Sub was towed first to Ireland then to Deveonport, England for repairs.

Nautilus in the dry dock in Devonport, England undergoing repairs to the engines and other items things that failed during the first part of the voyage.
The original profile of the former O-12 can be seen clearly. The stub of the retractable probe on the bow can be see. This was to be deployed when under the ice to prevent the sub from running into 'ice keels' and was in actuality a large hydraulic cylinder .
Interesting to note that the bow planes have been removed. The slot where the planes would normally be deployed from is missing. Later the Nautilus lost her stern planes in the ice and could not effectively dive.

This photo is believed to have H. Carl Schnetter, Engineer, left; Oiler John A. Janson, center and Oiler Harry Zoelter on the right. Life looks dirty and grim.
An unidentified man is seen through the doorway at rear of photo.
